"Sugaring" or sugar epilation

Waxes, shavers, epilators… Did you know that there is a natural and cheap way to remove unwanted hair? All you need is sugar and lemon and you can easily make it at home. In this article, we will explain what sugar epilation, known as “sugaring”, consists of, as well as its advantages compared to other epilation methods.

What does “sugaring” mean?

“Sugaring” is a method of epilation used since ancient times in ancient Egypt and other countries in the East. All you need is sugar and lemon. This method is similar to waxing, but it also has other advantages that we will explain in this article.

In some countries you can find this pasta in stores, but it would be best to prepare it yourself at home, as it is a very simple process. Once you learn how to do this, you will not want to resort to any other method of hair removal.

Lemon used as an ingredient in wax for epilation with sugar

What do you need for sugar hair removal?

The only ingredients you need for sugar hair removal are:

  • 2 cups sugar
  • The juice of a lemon
  • Water (only if you don’t have enough lemon juice)

How is it prepared

Add the lemon juice and two cups of sugar to a medium-sized saucepan or skillet. Lemon juice should cover the sugar, if not, add water.

Heat the mixture over medium heat and mix with a wooden spoon until the sugar dissolves. If you have a kitchen thermometer, make sure the temperature reaches 115 ° C.

After it starts to boil, turn the heat to low and wait until the mixture thickens and becomes sticky. It should be golden and soft, almost like honey.

If the depilatory wax obtained is too dark, you may have burned it and in this case you must prepare it again. You should never let it simmer for more than a minute.

Take it off the heat and let it cool.

And that’s how you got your own “wax” used for sugar epilation.

Sugar epilation has many advantages

How to do sugar epilation

You can opt for a skin exfoliation before epilation, but we do not recommend doing this if you have very sensitive skin.

  • So that the sugar-based wax does not stick too hard to the skin, you can sprinkle a little talcum powder on the area you intend to epilate.
  • Clean and dry this area well so that you do not have problems with gluing the wax.
  • Wash your hands well and, if you want, you can grease them with a little oil.
  • Take a little wax and apply it in the opposite direction to hair growth. On the legs, for example, where the hair grows down, you need to apply it with movements from bottom to top.
  • If you notice that the wax is too thick, heat it a little more.
  • Spread the wax over the entire area so that it covers it with a thin layer. Without waiting, pull in the opposite direction, ie in the direction of hair growth (if you epilate your legs, pull from top to bottom).
  • Use the other hand to stretch your skin.
  • Then apply the paste on another area and repeat the procedure.
  • Finally, use a moisturizer or aloe vera gel to soothe the skin.
  • If any traces of wax remain, remove them with a little warm water.

The advantages of sugar epilation

  • It is very cheap, as you only need sugar and lemon.
  • It lasts as long as waxing.
  • It is less painful than waxing.
  • It also works for very short hair.
  • Use at room temperature.
  • Helps remove dead cells and regenerate the skin.
  • It can be applied on any area of the body.
